Update

Wooooo Week 3 almost took me all the way out – but by the grace of God we made it. For this week my main focus was working toward completing this fireplace build.

First up I tackled getting the frame for the mantel built. I use a two 2x2s. I cut the first one 70 inches long to match the width of the fireplace. Second, I cut 12 roughly 3 inch pieces of 2×2 and attached them to the 70 inch piece with wood glue and screws. Lastly I attached the mantel frame to the fireplace with 4 wood screws to ensure it does not go anywhere.

Feeling very confident after the mantel frame build, I decided to tackle the crown molding…

I think the pictures pretty much sum up how that went. Crown molding is definitely not something that comes easily to me. I decided to leave the crown molding be for the moment and move on to something else… TILE!

So the hubby and I went on the hunt for the perfect tile, I knew I wanted a white/cream mosaic tile with variation in it and that’s all I knew. I was not set on a particular pattern. We went to two local tile stores and I was utterly unimpressed with their selections, my husband was just unimpressed with the driving around from tile store to tile store (hahaha). Finally we ended up at my tried and true favourite Home Depot (manifesting a future sponsorship) and finally I got all the feels and had tons of options to choose from.

picture is a still from my instagram stories

After taking about 45 minutes to choose one we were on are way to the cash register, when I fell in love with “the” tile! After a few eye rolls from the hubby he loaded up the new tile, we selected grout, paid and we were on our way home! I forgot we needed a tile saw, so back to home depot we went! We grabbed the RYOBI 7 inch wet tile table saw and headed home finalement!

I was so excited… I got started right away… things didn’t quite go as I expected and I had to restart (look out for a post dedicated to this coming up soon). With a lot of persistence and an aching back, I finally finished tiling!

I used a tile adhesive, I let it set for the suggested 24 hours and some. Then I went in and grouted with a pre-mixed grout in the color, Snow White. Luckily grouting was easier than I expected. Once grouting was complete I quickly installed the fireplace, so I could get rid of the massive box it was in.

Although, crown molding still needs to be fixed and I have yet to settle on a carpet which were on my to do list for this week, I am extremely happy with the progress made for week 3.

    1. Thank you so much for following along 🙂

    2. I got a good laugh out of your relating your husband driving to tile shops with you frustrated about the perfect tile, and him about the driving! We are doing our kitchen now (not with ORC) and I can relate. Seriously though you vision and design look gorgeous so far!
