5 Mistakes to avoid when Wallpapering

Hello there,

DSC00355

I recently wallpapered my foyer – please forgive the dim pictures it’s a small space so taking pictures was not an easy task.

I thought because it’s such a small area and I was only doing one wall it would be a breeze… boy was I wrong. It was a mess, a big ol’ piping HOT mess. Despite the mess I completed the wall and today I am sharing with you the 5 mistakes I made so you… yes you can avoid the mess.

Without further a do…

Mistake #1: Buying recommended amount based on measurements.

Do not buy just enough! I repeat do not buy just enough. I cannot stress this enough. Buy an extra roll or two.

If using a wallpaper with a pattern such as marble, lining up that pattern causes a lot of the wallpaper to be wasted.

Mistake #2: Not buying the wallpaper kit.

This is not the area to save your coins. Just buy it. I ended up spending the $14.99 CDN and it was well worth it.

Mistake #3: Going Solo.

Enlist an extra pair of hands, you will save yourself so much hassle. Trying to reposition the wallpaper alone is difficult and will lead to tears. Save yourself and the wallpaper and get help.

Mistake #4: Winging it.

Plan, plan, plan! Cutting one piece and hanging and then going cutting another is a huge mistake and will only lead to you wasting your wallpaper. Take your time and measure the length of wall, adding an additional 4 inches to the section. Cut the first section lay it on the floor. Line up your pattern before cutting the next sections, making sure to always leave a minimum of 4 inches extra. Once you are done, then start applying to the wall.

Mistake #5: Do not cut the wallpaper when wet.

This is probably the most important! No matter how sharp the knife is the paper will tear if it is to wet and not leave you with a neat cut. Save yourself the hassle of having to redo a section completely and just give it about 20 minutes to dry before trimming the excess.

Hope my mistakes make your wallpapering adventure smooth sailing. Stay tuned for a post on how I finished decorating the area.

See you soon,

Shandelle
